Well, mostly one resolution. After Maureen posted her stats for 2014 re: male/female authors and diversity I added up my own and wow, the authors/characters I read about are still mostly white ladies. I’ve decided to consciously try to read more books by and about people from other cultures this year. With this in mind I’ve created a shelf on goodreads which I’ll work my way through, and maybe I’ll do a monthly feature or something.
Another idea has been floated in the flat that we put a big map on the wall and pin it whenever we read a book by or about a particular country/city. Not sure how I’ll record my straight sci-fi/fantasy books but otherwise I’m excited to see a visual representation of my unimaginative reading travels.
Some books on my to-be-read list I’m especially looking forward to reading:
- Lagoon, Nnedi Okorafor
- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, N. K. Jemison
- A Stranger in Olondria, Sofia Samatar
- Wheel of the Infinite, Martha Wells
- Gabi, a Girl in Pieces, Isabel Quintero (update: reviewed here)
